Yeah, we have really nice….whuh?
September 6, 2008 – 1:05 pmThis past weekend I was in San Antonio visiting my BFF, and we were at a mall strolling around (that’s what you do in San Antonio). While BFF was in the optometry store on an errand, I strolled into a shoe store that’s pretty hip, where I have bought things in years past. I had on this sweet pair of Spanish Espadrilles that are colorful and eye-catching, and the shopgirl began exclaiming about them and wanting to know where I got them (this is normal when I wear these shoes) as soon as I walked in.
me: oh, thanks! I got them in Spain (feeling all world-travelly)
her: of course, you can’t find anything like that here
me: no, you can’t
her: well, is there anything I can help you find?
me: I’m just browsing around, but actually it smells a lot like leather in here so I don’t think—
her (interrupting): yeah we have a lot of really nice —
me (and now we’re talking simultaneously): there’s anything here for me because I don’t-
her: shoes here now–
me: buy leather (and now she’s confused). Actually, what I mean is, I don’t buy leather, but thanks anyway.
her (I have now sprouted an extra head): huh?…
me: ok, bye!
No, seriously, it was obvious that no one had ever told this girl that they abstain from buying leather cause by the look on her face, you’d have thought I had told her I eat children for breakfast or something super-countercultural. Apparently, you just don’t ask for synthetics in Texas.
